India's Gagan Narang competes in the 50m Mens Rifle event at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.

He’s one of India’s most decorated athletes, but Gagan Narang’s prestigious shooting career would not have come about if it wasn’t for his parents selling their plot of land.
The Olympic marksman, who was born in Chennai - the capital of the Indian state Tamil Nad - tried his hand at several sports when he was younger but got hooked to the sport of shooting from the outset
Noticing their son’s talent, Narang’s parents sold a plot of land in Hyderabad in order to buy his first gun and follow his dreams.
Although the plot in the capital of southern India's Telangana state would be worth a fair amount of money today, it paid off with the marksman winning a medal at every possible level of competition and became a legend in his home nation.
Competing for over two decades, Narang is a three-time World Cup medallist, two-time world record holder, Olympic bronze medallist and has 10 Commonwealth Games medals.
The 34-year-old is also the only shooter to have achieved a perfect 600/600 in the 10m Air Rifle, a world record, twice, and has received his country’s highest sporting honor, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and the fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri.
More recently, the right-hand shooter won a silver medal in the men’s 50m rifle prone event at the Commonwealth Shooting Championships at Belmont.
Having competed in multiple locations across the globe, the 50m rifle shooter only had praise for the GC2018 Shooting venue and the Games’ home nation.
“I was very impressed with the range, its location and the facilities it offers,” Narang told GC2018.com.
“Growing up I have heard and watched numerous documentaries on the Australian outback, the golden beaches and I was thrilled to have a firsthand experience.
“We were in Brisbane days before the first Ashes Test at the Gabba and there was a lot of talk surrounding that.
“What appeals to me the most is the great enthusiasm among the Aussies for sports.”
One of the most decorated athletes in Commonwealth Games history, Narang will be bringing his distinguished experience to GC2018, being named in the Indian Shooting team of 27 athletes.
The team are one of the nations to watch across the three disciplines of Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun, currently standing second on the all-time Shooting Commonwealth Games medal list and the sport accounting for over a quarter of the country’s total Commonwealth medals.
“India is fielding a 27-member strong shooting team - some proven talent, some unknown but has proven their worth nationally,” Narang said.
“Each one has the ability to finish with a medal.
I would say India's shooting contingent will once again have a rich medal haul at the Commonwealth Games.”
Competing in the 50-metre rifle prone event at GC2018, Narang is hoping his history with winning gold in Australia - four gold medal at Melbourne 2006 - will repeat on the Gold Coast.
“Every Commonwealth Games is unique in its flavour. As an athlete, I enjoy the buzz of the games as much as the actual games,” he said.
“I had won big in Melbourne back in 2006 and that really set the stage for a long and successful sporting journey. I would expect for some turning points this time as well.
“Not just me, there are some juniors in the team, who have worked closely with me, are expected to win medals. It will be very satisfying if all of us are able to accomplish our goals in shooting respective events.”
Tickets to the GC2018 Shooting competition are limited with only two sessions remaining – SH0901 on Monday 9 April and SH1001 on Tuesday 10 April .

16-year-old Muskan Muskan bags India’s fourth individual gold in Sydney

Final 25m Pistol Women Junior

ISSF Junior World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Sydney, AUS

The Indian youngster bested People’s Republic of China’s Qin Sihang and Thailand’s Kanyakorn Hirunphoem, who respectively took silver and bronze in the 25m Pistol Women Junior final, the second-to-last event of the ISSF Junior World Cup.
The final competition day at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Sydney (AUS) opened with another gold awarded to the Indian National Team, as Muskan Muskan secured the brightest medal in the 25m Pistol Women Junior event.

The 16-year-old shooter — who placed 4th at last year’s ISSF Junior World Championship in Suhl (GER) — took the lead at the end of the sixth round, when she nailed a perfect 5-hit series and found herself sitting on a 3-point advantage over her closest rival, People’s Republic of China’s Qin Sihang (16).

Muskan successfully defended that lead throughout the rest of the final, taking gold with 35 hits, while Qin finished with 34 and the silver medal around her neck. It’s the first ISSF medal for both the Indian and the Chinese junior shooter.

The bronze medal was awarded to Thailand’s 16-year-old Kanyakorn Hirunphoem, currently ranked 62nd in the world in this event and bearing a six-start World Cup experience. The Thai shooter — silver medalist in the Air Pistol event four days ago — finished with 26 hits and pocketed her second medal in Sydney.

A second Indian finalist — 16-year-old Manu Bhaker — placed in 4th position with 18 hits, surviving a shoot-off at the end of the sixth series against Zhu Siying (16) of the People’s Republic of China. Zhu then took 6th place with 12 hits, while her teammate Xiao Jiaruixuan (15) placed 5th with 14 hits, in spite of a 2-point penalty given to her for early loading.

Finally, two first-time participants — India’s 18-year-old Arunima Gaur and People’s Republic of China’s Li Xue — respectively took 7th place with 8 hits and 8th place with 7.

The top of the team podium was taken by India’s Bhaker, Muskan and Devanshi Rana, while their country-mates Gaur, Mahima Turhi Agrawal and Tanu Rawal secured silver. Thailand’s Hirunphoem, Viramon Kidarn and Luxciga Srinitivoravong placed 3rd.

15-year-old Anish Anish secures India’s third individual gold in Sydney

Final 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men Junior

ISSF Junior World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Sydney, AUS

In the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men Junior event, the young shooter first qualified for the final with the highest score, then prevailing over two of his teammates and over three Chinese participants.
In the one final scheduled for today at the Sydney International Shooting Centre in Sydney (AUS), Anish Anish of India climbed atop the podium in the men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Junior event.

The 15-year-old — who placed 7th in this event at the ISSF World Cup Stage 1 in Guadalajara (MEX), earlier this month — led the match since its very first stage, as he was the only shooter able to nail a perfect 5-hit series during the whole final. Indeed, after recording the highest qualification score with 585 points, Anish concluded with 29 total hits, pocketing the first international gold medal of his career in this event.

Two Chinese shooters placed alongside him on the Rapid Fire Pistol podium: 19-year-old Cheng Zhipeng took silver with 27 hits, adding it to the bronze he won at last year’s ISSF Junior World Championship in Suhl (GER), while Zhang Jueming (20) finished with 23 and claimed bronze in his first Junior World Cup start ever.

Appearing in his second final at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Sydney, Anhad Jawanda finished just outside of the medal positions, finishing in 4th place with 17 hits and improving from the 7th position he obtained two days ago in the Air Pistol event.

Jawanda was followed by the third Chinese final participant — 19-year-old Pan Junchen — who scored 12 hits and took 5th place in first Junior World Cup start ever. Eliminated after four series, India’s 15-year-old Rajkanwar Singh Sandhu signed off with 7 and placed 6th in the first international appearance of his career.

On the team podium, Zhang, Cheng and Pan secured the gold medal and set a new Junior World Record with 1733 points, while India’s Anish, Jawanda and Adarsh Singh took silver. The bronze medal was awarded to a second Indian team, composed by Sandhu, Japtyesh Singh Jaspal and Mandeep Singh.

Wang Zhehao dominates the Air Pistol final, signs a new Junior World Record

Final 10m Air Pistol Men Junior

ISSF Junior World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Sydney, AUS

The Chinese 19-year-old — gold medalist in 50m Pistol Men at last year’s ISSF Junior World Championship in Suhl (GER) — put the gold medal around his neck, closing with an impressive advantage on India’s silver medalist, Gaurav Rana.
After four days of competition at the Sydney International Shooting Centre — where the ISSF Junior World Cup is currently taking place — it’s already quite clear that India and the People’s Republic of China are going to be the two main protagonists.

In the 10m Air Pistol Men Junior event, indeed, Chinese shooter Wang Zhehao absolutely dominated the final, climbing atop the podium and securing gold with 242.5 points. The 19-year-old athlete also signed a new Junior World Record, sealing the match with a 8.6-point advantage on his closest rival.

Despite placing five shooters in the final, India missed the brightest medal and ended up with the silver-bronze combo secured by Gaurav Rana and Anmol Anmol.

Rana (18) nailed the best placement of his international career, placing 2nd with 233.9 points, while Anmol scored 215.1 and added a bronze medal to the silver he won at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Gabala (AZE) in 2016.

People’s Republic of China second and third final participant concluded at the feet of the podium, as 19-year-old Tang Sihao and 20-year-old Liu Jinyao respectively took 4th and 5th place. Tang scored 195.3 points — losing a tie-breaking shoot-off against Anmol at the 20th shot mark — and Liu finished with 173.2.

Three more Indian shooters placed at the bottom three positions of the match: 19-year-old Arjun Singh Cheema took 6th position with152.7 points, while Anhad Jawanda (19) placed 7th with 134.4 and Abhishek Arya finished in 8th place with 114.5.

India’s Cheema, Rana and Anmol also pocketed the team gold, preceding Liu, Wang and Tang — who claimed silver for the People’s Republic of China — and Jawanda, Arya and Adarsh Singh who won bronze for India.

India’s Manu Bhaker secures a thrilling Air Pistol gold in Sydney

Final 10m Air Pistol Women Junior

ISSF Junior World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Sydney, AUS

The 16-year-old shooter overtook Thailand’s Kanyakorn Hirunphoem at the very last shot, adding the Junior World Cup gold medal to the one she won earlier this month at the ISSF World Cup in Guadalajara (MEX).
An exciting final match characterized the 10m Air Pistol Women Junior event in Sydney (AUS), where India’s Manu Bhaker prevailed over Thailand’s Kanyakorn Hirunphoem (16) at the very last shot, securing India’s second individual gold at the ISSF Junior World Cup.

After leading the match by as much as 2.2 points, indeed, Bhaker fired six consecutive shots outside the 10th ring, suddenly finding herself one point behind Hirunphoem with only two shots left to fire.

There, the 9.6-9.8 combo signed by the Indian 16-year-old was enough to definitely overtake her rival, who instead sealed her match with a disappointing 7.9.

Bhaker — who won individual and mixed team gold in Air Pistol at this month’s ISSF World Cup in Guadalajara (MEX) — finished with the score of 235.9 points, while Hirunphoem — who previously wrote a new Qualification World Record with 576 points — took silver with 234.9.

The podium was then completed by People’s Republic of China’s Lu Kaiman, 41st at last year’s ISSF Junior World Championship in Suhl (GER) and making her first Junior World Cup participation in Sydney. The 18-year-old won her country’s seventh individual medal, taking bronze with 214.2 points.

Placing just outside of the podium, Bhaker’s teammate Devanshi Rana failed to put a medal on top of her first international competition. The 18-year-old debutant, indeed, took 4th place with 195.3 points.

A second Chinese finalist — 15-year-old Xiao Jiaruixuan, Air Pistol junior gold medalist at last year’s Asian Championship in Wako City (JPN) — finished in 5th position with 173.2 points.

She was followed by Singapore’s 15-year-old Shirlene Hew Yun Ting and Chinese Taipei’s 19-year-old Chien Hsin-Yi, who respectively finished in 6th position with 153.3 points and in 7th position with 133.5.

At the bottom of the table, Amanda Mak Sao Keng (17) finished 8th in her first international competition ever, scoring 112.9 points.

Bhaker, Rana and Mahima Turhi Agrawal also brought India on top of the team podium, while Xiao, Lu and Li Xue won silver for the People’s Republic of China. Thailand’s Hirunphoem, Luxciga Srinitivoravong and Warunyapha Kaewngoen took the team bronze.

Chinese shooter Duan Yuwei claims Trap Women Junior gold at the end of a challenging final

ISSF Junior World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Sydney, AUS
The People’s Republic of China’s 19-year-old shooter emerged as the Trap Women Junior gold medalist in Sydney (AUS), at the end of a match conducted under some challenging weather conditions.
The second competition day at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Sydney (AUS) closed with a rainy and windy victory signed by Duan Yuwei of the People’s Republic of China, who climbed on the highest step of the Trap Women Junior podium at the end of a very challenging match, heavily conditioned by the weather.

However, it took two additional shoot-off targets for the 19-year-old Chinese shooter to prevail over Great Britain’s Augusta Rose Campos-Martyn (19) — 6th at last year’s Junior World Cup in Porpetto (ITA) — as both Duan and her British rival closed the match with 36 hits out of 50 targets.

It’s the second gold medal of the competition for the People’s Republic of China, who also climbed atop the podium in the 10m Air Rifle Men Junior event.

Duan’s 20-year-old teammate Gao Wendi completed the podium in 3rd place, taking bronze with 30 crushed targets out of 40 and climbing on the ISSF Junior World Cup podium in her first international appearance.

Right outside of the medal position, Australia’s Charlie Anna Hudso-Czerniecki (18) — holder of the highest qualification score with 105 hits out of 125 — took 4th place and crushed 22 clays out of 35 in her first international competition ever.

Besting the 7th place she obtained at last year’s World Championship, India’s 20-year-old Soumya Gupta took 5th place with 18 hits out of 30 targets, while the third Chinese shooter in the final — 18-year-old Zhang Ting — concluded in 6th position with 12 hits out of 25 clays.

On the team podium, the People’s Republic of China’s Zhang, Duan and Gao secured gold, followed by Australia’s Hudson-Czerniecki, Alexis Elsa Preston and Antonia Katharina Loizos in 2nd place, and by Italy’s Erica Sessa, Diana Ghilarducci and Maria Lucia Palmitessa in 3rd position.

Final Trap Men Junior

ISSF Junior World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Sydney, AUS

Italy’s men’s Trap shooter Matteo Marongiu — he junior silver medalist at last year’s ISSF Shotgun World Championship — climbed atop the podium at the Sydney International Shooting Centre, where the ISSF Junior World Cup is currently taking place.

To do so, the 18-year-old bested People’s Republic of China’s Ouyang Yiliu (18) in an exciting tie-breaking shoot-off for the gold medal. Both Marongiu and Ouyang, in fact, crushed 39 of their 50 final targets, and it took two more for the Italian youngster to secure his first international gold.

The podium was completed by India’s Vivaan Kapoor — who previously finished 18th at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Porpetto (ITA), his only other ISSF start. The 16-year-old Indian shooter secured bronze with 30 hits out of 40 clays.

Eliminated in 4th position because of his lower bib number, Chinese Taipei’s Yang Kun-Pi (19) nailed his best placement out of three Junior World Cup starts, hitting 26 out of 35 targets.

He was followed by Australia’s 19-year-old Nathan Steven Argiro, who placed 5th with 21 hits out of 30 targets, after qualifying for the final with the highest score: 115 out of 125.

The first shooter eliminated from the match was the People’s Republic of China’s second finalist — 19-year-old Li Cheng — who crushed 15 targets out of 25 and finished in 6th place.

The People’s Republic of China’s Li, Ouyang and Yu Haicheng secured the team gold medal, while Australia’s Argiro, Mitchell Iles-Crevatin and Adam Joshua Bylsma took silver and India’s Kapoor, Lakshay Lakshay and Ali Aman Elahi won bronze.,
