2014 ISSF World Cup Series closed in Gabala (AZE) – Medals and Records

The Russian Federation finished atop of the medal standings of the 2014 ISSF World Cup Final held in Gabala, Azerbaijan, followed by the People's Republic of China and by Germany. “This is an excellent venue, we are looking forward to come back in 2015.” ISSF Secretary General Franz Schreiber said.

The 2014 ISSF World Cup Final in Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun events held in Gabala, Azerbaijan, from the 21st to the 28th of October, came to an end today.

154 athletes coming from 39 countries competed there in the 15 Olympic shooting events. Only the bests qualified to participate: the 2013 World Cup Final title defenders and the 2014 ISSF World Championship medallists met the top-8 athletes in each event, selected through this year's ISSF World Cup Stages held in Fort Benning (USA), Tucson (USA), Almaty (KAZ), Munich (GER), Maribor (SLO) and Beijing (CHN).

The Russian Federation finished atop of the medal standing, pocketing 5 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medals here in Gabala. The People's Republic of China closed the event in second in spite of collecting an impressive total of 14 medals (3 Gold, 3 Silver, 8 Bronze). Germany followed in third with 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medals.

Two records were equalled during the competition: USA's Haley Dunn equalled the current Skeet Women World Record of 74 hits out of 75 targets, while Russia's Leonid Ekimov equalled the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men Final World Record of 35 points.

“This year's ISSF World Cup Final has been a great success.” The ISSF Secretary General Franz Schreiber said. “The athletes gave their best at the end of an intense season, and we would like to thank the organizers of this event who set up an excellent shooting range. This new facility in Gabala will host a combined ISSF World Cup Stage next year, and we are looking forward to come back here.”

The ISSF World Cup Final concluded the 2014 international shooting sport season. The 2015 ISSF World Cup Series will kick-off from Acapulco (MEX) on the 28 of February, next year.

Pang (CHN) and Campriani (ITA) won the SIUS Champions Trophy in Gabala

The traditional trophy sponsored by SIUS closed this year's ISSF World Cup Final. Two Olympic Champions secured the 5000 € award: Nicco Campriani of Italy (Rifle) and Pang Wei of the People's Republic of China (Pistol).

The 2014 ISSF Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun World Cup Final in Gabala was closed by the SIUS's Champions Trophy, the traditional competition that brings the very best athletes of the world cup final on the shooting line. .

That's a challenge that only the top athletes can take. Indeed, only the ISSF World Cup Final medallists are eligible to participate in the two Champions Trophies: the 10m Air Pistol and 10m Air Rifle mixed knock-out rounds.

The formula of the trophy is appealing: after four competition shots, the participant with the lowest score is eliminated, and from there on, one shot after the other, the shooter with the lowest total has to leave the match.

When only two athletes are left on the line, the total goes back to zero: the match turns into a duel, and three shots are fired to decide the winner.

Pang Wei of the People's Republic of China – a 2008 Olympic Champion – won the 10m Air Pistol Champions Trophy, beating the Russian record-setter Leonid Ekimov at the very last shot.

Two Olympic Champions met at the Rifle event, where Italy's Niccolo Campriani outdid Pang's teammate Yi Siling to secure the trophy.

The two winners were awarded 5.000,00 Euro each, sponsored by the SIUS company, the ISSF official results provider that has a long tradition in supporting the shooting sport.

ISSF World Cup Final Day 5: Skeet and Rifle Prone finals closed the competition

Skeet Women, Skeet Men and 50m Rifle Prone Men finals were staged during the last day of the 2014 ISSF World Cup Final in Gabala.
The last day of competitions of the 2014 ISSF Wolrd Cup Final in Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun events held in Gabala, Azerbaijan, has been the stage of three great final matches.

The day started off with the Skeet Women final, which was postponed yesterday afternoon due to the fog that reduced the visibility down to a few meters. Albina Shakirova of the Russian Federation won the title, beating Wei Meng of the People's Republic of China in the Gold medal match. Shakirova (27) scored 15 out of 16 targets in the semi-final, and then outdid Slovakia's Danka Bartekova in a shoot-off to advance to the medal match. In spite of the difficult weather conditions (again the fog, with cold rain in addition) the Russian shooter hit 15 targets once again, outscoring the 25-year old Chinese finalist Wei who closed the match in second place with 11 hits. Bartekova followed them, clinching the Bronze with 15 hits after beating Italy's Diana Bacosi, fourth with 12 hits in the medal match.

Germany's Daniel Brodmeier, who arrived here in Gabala after winning a Silver medal at the 2014 ISSF World Championship one month ago, finished in the spotlights once again by winning the 50m Rifle Prone Men event with 210.5 points. The 27-year old German athlete had already finished upon the same World Cup Final podium two days ago, as he had claimed the 50m Rifle 3 Positions Men Silver medal. Today, he was followed by China's Zhao Shengbo, Silver with 208.5 points, and by his teammate Henri Junghaenel, who came here to defend the title he had won in Munich last year, and then walked out of the competition with 187.9 points and the Bronze medal.

The Skeet Men final closed the last day of Gabala. Jin Di claimed China's 14th World Cup Final medal, the third Gold, and he did it an epic way. After passing through the semi-final with 15 hits, he met Egypt's Azmy Mehelba in the Gold medal match. Both the athletes completed the series with a perfect score of 16 hits, and the shoot-off that followed is going to be remembered in the history of shooting sport. Jin and Mehelba cleared 21 shoot-off targets - more than what they got to shoot in the medal match - before the Gold could be assigned. That occurred when Mehelba missed his 22nd clay and Jin hit it, securing his first world cup title in career. The recently-crowned Skeet world champion, Alexander Zemlin of the Russian Federation, joined them on the podium, as he beat Stefan Nilsson of Sweden in the Bronze medal match by 16 to 14 hits.
