Shooting World Championships for persons with disabilities

Last week was played in the German city of Suhl the Shooting World Championships for persons with disabilities. A total of 260 athletes from 53 countries took part in the most important competition of this sport, which is held every four years.
On the 21st airgun R3 and R4 competitions were held. To compete in these modalities, they use the same weapon used in conventional ISSF competitions and with the same tenths scoring system.
The R3 mode is 10 meters Rifle Prone  supported by both elbows in a fixed table and lead with a shooting strap (the same as used in ISSF competitions). 85 athletes competed in R3, in mixed mode, in which men and women compete under the same rules and number of shots. First place in the qualifying round was awarded by the British Matt SKELHON with 635.7 points (an average of 105.9 per set), but the final victory was awarded by the representative of Korea Jinho PARK, who, with 211.9 points, has broken the World Record Final of this modality.
In the modality of R4 Carbine, also mixed, they shoot with the rifle resting on a support with a spring without being able to touch his elbows on the table or chair. Depending on the varying degrees of disability, the spring will have more or less stiffness. At the end of the two qualifying rounds that have brought together a total of 55 athletes, the best has been the British Richard DAVIES, with 634.5 points (average of 105.75), but after the Final the one who has been proclaimed World Champion Korean has been Youngjun JEON with 210.7, which also involves a new World Record Final of this modality.
In the R6 modality, which is commonly known among shooters as ISSF 50m Prone Rifle, athletes also compete with 22LR caliber carbines generation with both elbows on the floor or on the table and on a leash shot that helps maintain the position and attachment of the weapon.

The winner in the qualifying round was the British Matt SKELHON with 620.6 (103.4 average), far from his World Record 626.3 achieved in Alicante in the 2013 World Cup.
In the final, the English SKELHON again proved his class and from his wheelchair overcame all his rivals earning the title of World Champion Rifle Prone with a score of 209.5, beating the World Record Final.
In this Handicap Shooting World Championship, skeet shooting occupies a position, at least, interesting. It has been held an exhibition tournament because right now the handicapped skeet is being scrutinized in order to integrate it within the Paralympic program, probably from Tokyo 2020.

The Handicapped skeet is divided into two categories, depending on the degree of disability of the athlete: from wheelchair or standing. In Suhl we have witnessed how people with a high degree of disability are capable of hitting a dish that leaves the machine at high speed, like any ISSF shooter because they share the same rules of competition, without changing anything.

Carlos Garletti e Sergio Vida, precursores do Tiro Esportivo Paralímpico brasileiro

Hoje, a história mudou.

IPC World Championship in SUHL - 50m Rifle Prone Mixed SH1

Jonas Jacobsson close-up
Jonas Jacobsson is a One to Watch at the IPC Shooting World Championships in Suhl this year.

After an exhilarating first three days of competition at the 2014 IPC Shooting World Championships in Suhl, Germany, which have been dominated by South Korean athletes, more great action is to come on Tuesday (22 July).
Sweden’s Jonas Jacobsson andSlovakia’s Veronika Vadovicova, gold medallists already in Suhl, are back in action in the R6 (mixed 50m rifle prone SH1), as is Korea’s gold medallist from Monday (21 July) Jinho Park.
Jacobsson, a 17-time Paralympic gold medallist, is the defending champion however but knows he will face stiff competition from London 2012 Paralympic gold medallist Abdulla Sultan Alaryani of the United Arab Emirates, a bronze medal winner already in Suhl.
Also in action is Germany’s Natascha Hiltrop who will be eager to medal on home soil, whilst China’s Cuiping Zhang will start as favourite.
Meanwhile, in the day’s other event, the P3 (mixed 25m Pistol SH1), South Korea’s Heejun Lee will be looking for his second gold medal of the competition.
To secure gold however, he knows he will most probably have to finish ahead of China’s Jainfei Lee, the gold medal winner in this event at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
That day, Lee was pushed close by Russia’s Sergey Malyshev, and his compatriot Valeriy Ponomarenko, who took bronze.
Malyshev has already claimed a silver in Suhl and will be looking to go one step better should he make the final.
Elsewhere, there are two demonstration events taking place, with the visually impaired shooting and the para-shotgun trap on display.
For more information about the events, or to check live results visit the Suhl 2014 official website.

Sweden’s Jonas Jacobsson claimed gold with his very last shot in an incredible R1 (men’s rifle standing SH1) final on the first day of the 2014 IPC Shooting World Championships in Suhl, Germany.
Elsewhere, there were gold medals for Slovakia’s Veronika Vadovicova in the R2 (women’s 10m standing SH1) and Ukraine’s Vasyl Kovalchuk in the R9 (mixed 50m rifle prone SH2), as three world records were also broken.
In the R1 (men’s rifle standing SH1) final, Jacobsson took an early lead and looked good for his 18th world title as the final reached its climax.
But he dramatically let his lead slip with his 19th shot and looked to have blown his chances, with South Korea’s Seungchul Lee taking the advantage.
However, the pressure of the final shot proved too much for Lee as he fired a 9.4 against Jacobsson’s 10.5, allowing the 49-year-old to take gold with a score of 204.2.
Despite nearly throwing away victory in the dying stages, Jacobsson knew he had the experience to pull through.
He said: “I was thinking on the last shot that I need a good 10. I have taken 17 gold medals in the World Championships before, and the guy next to me hasn’t had a gold medal yet.
“So I knew that he would be having a lot of thoughts in the last shot, and that if I could shoot a good 10, then he might shoot a nine.
“I knew that I had to shoot pretty quickly, because that would put the pressure on him, as if it was a good shot, the audience would cheer and he would hear it. So I tried to shoot before him and shoot a good 10, and it worked.”
Ukraine's Andrii Doroshenko took the bronze in an event that saw two world records smashed. South Korea’s Jinho Park broke a qualification world record with 626.8 and helped his country to break the team record of 1853.9.
In the R2 (women’s 10m standing SH1) final, Vadovicova looked controlled as she claimed her first title.
After qualifying comfortably in first position, she lived up to her favourite’s tag with a strong performance in the final.
She was pushed all the way however by Turkey’s Cagla Bas, who was actually leading with five shots to go.
But Vadovicova’s class shone through in the final stages, as she consistently shot around the 10 mark, including an impressive 10.5 with her final effort to claim the title.
Bas took silver - a superb achievement after finishing 28th in the event at the last World Championships - whilst South Korea’s Yunri Lee claimed the bronze.
Although no British athlete won a medal in the R2 (women’s 10m standing SH1), the team did set a new qualification team record scoring 1215.9
Ukraine’s Kovalchuk took gold in the R9 (mixed 50m rifle prone SH2) scoring 621.0 with consistent shooting.

The stage is set for 265 athletes from 53 countries to line-up up at the Schießsportzentrum Suhl (SSZ) in Germany for the biggest IPC Shooting World Championships in history.
Amongst the competitors from 18-26 July are some multiple Paralympic, world and European champion rifle shooters you should look out for on the live results page.
Since winning gold on her Paralympic debut at Beijing 2008, Vadovicova has emerged as one of the best rifle shooters on the international circuit. Just in October 2013 the 32-year-old won two European titles in Alicante, Spain, in R2 (women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1) and R8 (women’s 50m rifle three positions).
Into 2014, Vadovicova has secured six first place finishes in IPC Shooting World Cups around the world and set a new R2 finals world record in June to top off a great start to the season ahead of the Worlds.
British shooter Matt Skelhon and the host nation's Natascha Hiltrop will face Vadovicova in the search for their own glory.
R2 and R8 Paralympic champion Zhang is a long-term threat to Vadovicova, having beat the Slovakian in both events at London 2012. But their rivalry extends back a long way.
Four years earlier, the Slovakian had collected her first Paralympic gold over Zhang in Beijing.
At the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, in 2010, Zhang collected R2 silver whilst Vadovicova languished in seventh place. However in R8, it was Vadovicova who finished ahead of the Chinese superstar with the two women in second and third respectively.
One of the greatest athletes ever to have graced para-sport, 17-time world and Paralympic champion Jacobsson is considering whether he will retire before Rio 2016 after an incredible three decades at the highest level of shooting.
He will head out in Suhl in one of his best events, R7 (men’s 50m rifle three positions SH1), to defend his world title from 2010 as well as being in the mix in other rifle events.
At Alicante 2013, he smashed through the 1,170 points barrier in R7 to set a new qualification world record and seal a score that he had been searching for since Sydney 2000.
4. Doron Shaziri, Israel
Shaziri has been eyeing up R7 glory behind Jacobsson for a number of years, even going through in first place ahead of the Swede at the preliminary rounds of London 2012 before missing out on gold by just a few points in the final round.
He has been narrowing the gap since the pair first met in Sydney but finished behind Jacobsson once again in 2010 and at Alicante 2013.
Currently the world-record holder in the R4 (mixed 10m air rifle standing SH2), the Auckland native won a Paralympic title in the event at Beijing 2008. He went on to win gold in R9 (men’s 50m rifle prone SH2) at the World Championships in 2010, followed by bronze in R4 at London 2012. To date, he has set a total of 10 Oceania, 13 world, and four Paralympic records in his decade-long career.
6. Dragan Ristic, Serbia
At Alicante 2013, Ristic just edged Ukrainian R5 (mixed 10m air rifle prone SH2) Paralympic champion Vasyl Kovalchuk by 0.1 points to claim the European title in a thrilling final.
Just two years after taking up shooting, the 35-year-old claimed gold at the 2010 Worlds and is defending that title at Suhl 2014.
By the time Rio 2016 rolls around, Ristic will be firmly in the hunt for his first Paralympic silverware.
The 2014 IPC Shooting World Championships begin with the Opening Ceremony on 18 July, before competition starts on 19 July.
A full competition schedule can be found at www.suhl2014.com.

Given his meteoric rise to the top of the rankings, Tagliapietra could just register a surprise result.
A series of Paralympic, world and European champions will line-up from 18-26 July for the biggest IPC Shooting World Championships in history.
A total of 265 athletes from 53 countries, including top-level pistol shooters, will compete at the Schießsportzentrum Suhl (SSZ) in Germany.
Follow competitions live here.
David is on the comeback from an injury that stopped her in her tracks after a fourth-placed debut at the 2010 World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia.
At the 2013 IPC Shooting European Championships in Alicante, Spain, she won a bronze medal in P2 (women’s 10m air pistol SH1), to beat FYR Macedonian Paralympic champion Olivera Nakovska-Bikova. Her upward turn in form continued into 2014 with a new P2 finals world record in March.
Yelena Taranova, Azerbaijan
A rival to Hungarian David, Taranova completed a shock victory at Alicante 2013 with a new P2 finals world record that David went onto claim in March 2014.
At Suhl 2014, the Baku resident will be looking to collect her first ever world title.
Double Paralympic silver medallist Malyshev is one of the best Russian shooters in the team. A current holder of the P5 (10m air pistol standard SH1) world record and European title, Malyshev also excels in the P3 (mixed 25m pistol SH1).
Standing in his way is P5 world champion teammate Andrey Lebedinskiy who outscored Malyshev in the P3 Russian team.
Michael Tagliapietra, USA
Current world P3 world No.1 Tagliapietra is leading the charge at the worlds for team USA.
The former handcyclist only took up competitive shooting in 2012 and therefore Suhl 2014 will be his first major international competition aside from IPC Shooting World Cups.
Given his meteoric rise to the top of the rankings, Tagliapietra could just register a surprise result.
Jianfei Li, China
Li has medalled at every single Paralympic Games since Sydney 2000, including winning two golds. In 2010, the 36-year-old won P1 (men’s 10m air pistol SH1) world bronze, edging out Malyshev in the process.
In the absence of world champion and world record holder Korean Seakyun Park, Li could very well improve on his performance from four years ago.
The 2014 IPC Shooting World Championships begin with the Opening Ceremony on 18 July, before competition starts on 19 July.
A full competition schedule can be found at www.suhl2014.com.
You can also follow the competitions on IPC Shooting's Facebook and Twitter.

ISSF World Championship: 'Live TV for all 15 Olympic events

15.07.2014

ISSF World Championship: 'Live TV for all 15 Olympic events" ISSF Secretary General announced

The ISSF Secretary General Franz Schreiber unveiled the live TV project for the ISSF World Championship to take place in Granada, Spain, next September, and talked about the efforts of the shooting sport to maximize media coverage on the road leading to Rio 2016.
The ISSF Secretary General Franz Schreiber announced today live TV coverage for the 51st ISSF World Championship in all Shooting events – the first Rio 2016 qualifier for Shooting sport - that will take place in Granada, Spain, from the 6 through the 20 of September 2014.

All the 15 Olympic events in Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun discipline will be filmed and distributed live via Eurovision.

The ISSF is committed to offer the best media coverage ever for it's 51st ISSF World Championship in all Shooting events, which also represent our first qualification event with quota distribution for the Rio 2016 Games.” The ISSF Secretary General said.

ISSF President Olegario Vazquez Raña approved a significant investment to produce and distribute live TV footage of all our 15 Olympic events during the World Championship. We will offer the coverage of all Olympic qualifier Finals via EBU, for technical costs only. Our member federations can contact their national broadcasters, to inform them that the footage will be available on the Eurovision platform.”

The ISSF World Championship in all events takes place every four years, and it's the largest competition governed by the International Shooting Sport Federation. In 2010, at the 50th ISSF World Championship in Munich, more than 2000 athletes participated in 55 shooting events, including non-Olympic disciplines, and a comparable number of participants is expected in Granada, this year.

Media coverage is a key feature of the championship, as the ISSF Secretary General remarked: “We will offer a full set of services to media in occasion of our Championship. We've just re-launched our website, www.issf-sports.org, where we will publish live results, statistics and stories, and distribute photos to the press. In the next weeks, we will release a statement with further details.”

Our aim is to maximize the visibility of our sport in this key moment of the Olympic cycle. Rio 2016 will be an important step forward for our sport. After London 2012, we've changed our Finals, we've changed the scoring system, we've tried to make the sport more spectators-friendly.” Mr. Schreiber added. “The feedbacks we're receiving from spectators and media are extremely positive, and our grassroots are growing as new young athletes join our sport.”

Today, we have more media coverage than ever before in the history of our Federation. The Shooting Sport is on TV, press, and social media, and President Vazquez and the ISSF will continue to work in this direction, investing for the future of our sport.”

Last ISSF World Cup closed in Beijing: medals, records and qualified athletes

The last leg of this year’s ISSF World Cup Series was closed in Beijing, today. The People’s Republic of China finished atop of the medals standings. 6 records were set or equalled.

Today’s Skeet Men Finals won by Kuwait’s Abdullah Alrashidi closed the last leg of the 2014 ISSF World Cup Series, held in Beijing, China.
There, shooting on the lines of the 2008 Olympic Shooting Range, 550 athletes coming from 35 countries competed in the 15 Olympic Shooting events in the disciplines of Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun.

“We have to thank the Organizing Committee for their great work, here in Beijing.” The ISSF Secretary General Franz Schreiber said. “It has been an excellent competitions, with athletes coming from all other the globe to compete on one of the most well-maintained Olympic shooting ranges of the world.”

The host country, the People’s Republic of China, finished atop of the overall medal standings of the event, with an impressive tally of 17 medals, including 4 Gold, 8 Silver and 5 Bronzes. The Italian team followed in second place, with 3 Gold medals won in Rifle and Pistol events, and 2 Silver 2 Bronze pocketed in Shotgun events. The Russian Federation took the third place, with 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze medals.

The top shooters of the world were competing here, and Beijing’s shooting range is one of the best facilities around the world: no surprises then if excellent scores were recorded during this world cup stage.

China’s Yi Siling marked a new Final World Record of 211.0 points in the 10m Air Rifle Women event, and she was followed by her teammate Haoran Yang who shot a new Final World Record Junior of 209.1 points at the 10m Air Rifle Men event.

Beijing’s World Cup Stage closed the regular world cup season, and now the qualified athlete will participate in the ISSF World Cup Finals, to be held in Gabala, Azerbaijian, from the 21 through the 28 of October.
